Tennessee lawyer tried to hire hit man to kill estranged wife: investigators

Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have arrested a Collierville attorney accused of trying to hire someone to kill his estranged wife. At the request of 25th District Attorney General Mike Dunavant, TBI Special Agents began investigating Fred Auston Wortman III on June 4th. Several days earlier, a concerned citizen contacted law enforcement and reported that Wortman contacted him to find someone to kill his estranged wife. Today, Wortman met with a TBI Agent, who posed as a potential hit-man, and supplied him personal information about his wife and a down payment for the murder. TBI Agents, with the assistance of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, arrested the 39-year-old Collierville man and charged him with one count of Solicitation of First Degree Murder. At the time of this release, Wortman was being held in the Fayette County Jail on $15,000,000 bond. Fred Auston Wortman III, of Collierville, got busted after a citizen tipped off law enforcement to his alleged scheme.

Lawyer for 'biker cop' says dad's injuries from 2013 beating are like 'scrapes you'd get on a playground'

A TriBeCa banker broke down on the witness stand at the trial of an undercover cop Monday, saying he was "scared s---less" when he mowed down a biker who was part of a swarm that had been menacing him and his family. "As they're around my car, I feel the car being hit… and I'm horrified at this point," Alexian Lien, 34, testified at the Manhattan Supreme Court trial of "biker cop" Wojciech Braszczok and co-defendant Robert Sims. Braszczok and Sims are charged with participating in the bloody beating of Lien after a chase up the West Side Highway but are accused of punching the SUV's windows, not Lien, during the ugly attack. Other riders pulled Lien from his Range Rover, threw him to the ground and roughed him up in front of his wife and 2-year-old daughter. Much of the horrifying attack was caught on video. Lien, who was never charged, admitted he fled knowing he'd struck someone. He claimed the riders had banged on his vehicle and harassed him and his wife as they rode recklessly up the West Side Highway in hordes on Sept. 29, 2013. Things heated up after his wife chucked a half-eaten plum and a water bottle out the window at their road foes. He had a fender-bender with one motorcyclist, Christopher Cruz, and his car was then surrounded by the angry pack. "I'm horrified at this point and I recall asking my wife: 'What do I do?' " the teary witness said, remembering the tense moments before he ran over Edwin Mieses, who was left paralyzed. His wife, Rosalyn Ng, told him to "just go" and he "made a hard right." "I see there's an opening and I just go -- and knowing that I did hit someone," he said. "I just wanted to escape the situation." Once he got to an exit ramp in Washington Heights, Sims tried to open the driver's side door and Lien sped off again, plowing over another bike. "I'm scared. I'm scared s**tless," Lien testified. He's expected to testify about the beatdown this afternoon.
