The Hunt Continues It’s been a very bizarre day today. Contrary to many reports, the FBI reiterated there have been no arrests in the Boston Marathon bombing case. The AP has reported that there was a suspect in custody but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I believe that surveillance video and people taking pictures of the event will be our best bet in this case. We need to be careful in this whole process because the world is watching us but once things have settled it’ll be incumbent on all of us, including the Obama administration, to spend some time looking at how this happened and what we need to do to prevent these tragedies from happening in the future. Things like restoring the budget for the Office for Bombing Prevention which has seen its budget cut from $20 million to $11 million over the last few years. As the authorities continue to pursue the perpetrators of this tragedy and the families of those injured continue to gather themselves, this is not the time to politicize this issue but it is the time to start asking intelligent questions about what we can do to prevent this from happening again. Media Pressure Just days after the horrific terror attack in Boston, the investigation into who is responsible remains “wide open.” While this is heart-breaking for many, particularly the victims, who want answers, I have full faith that our law enforcement, FBI and those involved in the investigation are doing everything they possibly can to put the pieces together. Yesterday I gave you a litany of unfortunate examples of the media trying to pin blame on specific groups or ideology: right-wingers. That trend has continued. Richard Barrett, the former United Nations coordinator for the Al-Qaeda and Taliban monitoring team, said: "At the moment it looks more likely that it was a right-wing terrorist incident, rather than an Al Qaeda attack because of the size of the devices." Ricin Letter Scare On the heels of the bombings in Boston, we get the news that now two poison letters have been sent to Washington. The story is continuing to develop and we will bring you details as we get them. The first letter which tested positive for the deadly poison ricin was sent to Republican Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi. The next letter we've learned about today was addressed to Barack Obama and it also tested positive for the deadly poison. Both letters never made it to Washington, as they were thankfully intercepted at an off-site mail facility. The letters were allegedly sent by someone who was a frequent letter writer to lawmakers, and they were sent from Memphis, Tennessee with no return address. First Boston and now this. It’s time that we take a second look at our homeland security initiatives and what resources we’re giving the men and women who protect us. For more on this story, click here.
