Bungling Ebola
"The Ebola crisis in the United States has become an anchor threatening to sink the Obama presidency," according to The Hill. As we learn more about the incompetent response to Ebola here in the United States, it's easy to believe this to be true.
The second nurse to test positive for Ebola is a 29 year old woman by
the name of Amber Vinson. As if that wasn't already bad enough, we
learned yesterday that Vinson had traveled the day before she tested
positive for the virus. And making matters worse was the fact that
Vinson had a low-grade fever of 99.4 before getting on her flight from
Cleveland to Dallas. She apparently called the CDC to ask if it was OK
to fly and a CDC official gave her clearance to fly because her fever
was below their threshold of 100.4.
CDC Director Tom Frieden says, "She should not have been on that plane."
Gee, ya think? All of these issues have caused the CDC to reconsider
its protocols, including prohibiting healthcare workers who are treating
Ebola patients from taking public transportation. The CDC has also
decided to request
that airlines ask if sick passengers have been to Guinea, Liberia, or
Sierra Leone in the last 21 days. Wow, they are just now getting around
to that?
Amazingly enough, not only do we still not have a travel ban in place but we are still issuing visas for travelers from these Western African nations where Ebola remains rampant. How dumb could we possibly be? |

On Ebola: Three Things Should Happen Immediately
We have a legitimate crisis of confidence on our hands, with an emerging
healthcare emergency and an incompetent government response. Here are
three things that should happen immediately when it comes to this Ebola
crisis:
- CDC Director Tom Frieden should resign immediately.
- We should implement a commercial travel ban from these West African countries immediately
- We need to secure the borders immediately
And if I had to add a fourth thing, it would be for these government
officials at the CDC and the Obama administration to be honest with us.
Quit with the government happy-talk and be realistic about your
capabilities and your expectations. For the purposes of political
expediency, we've been told that everything was going to be OK here in
the United States. But the fact is that Ebola is now here and we
clearly do not have the means to protect everyone, as we now have two
brave nurses who have contracted the virus.
The government has misjudged and underestimated and now Americans are paying the price.
