Retired NYPD lieutenant Joseph Rooney dies aged 66

Joseph Rooney, a highly decorated retired NYPD Lieutenant & Vietnam veteran passed away Friday in Blauvelt NY at age 66 following a long battle with pulmonary disease Rooney who was assigned to the Anti Crime Unit of the 44th Precinct in the South Bronx during the tumultuous 1970s, amassed hundreds of arrests & received nearly 100 department citations including the prestigious Medal of Valor, the Department's third highest award. Rooney spent his entire 22 year career in The Bronx serving in the 40,44, 46, 47 & 48 Precincts as well as the 7th Division before retiring due to a line of duty disability in 1992 while assigned as a Lieutenant in the 40th Precinct. His exploits were documented in two books "Beat Cop to Top Cop" by John F. Timoney & "The Blue Myth" by Gene Maloney.. Prior to joining the NYPD in 1970, Rooney served in Vietnam with the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division from 1968-to 1970 where he was awarded numerous medals including the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife Brigette and four adult children. The Bronx native joined the police force shortly after serving in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970.
