Two cops help woman deliver baby on service road in Queens

On Saturday, January 09, 2016 at 1615 hours, officers from Highway Unit 3 responded to a report of a woman in labor on the Long Island Expressway and Kissena Boulevard, within the confines of the 107 Precinct. When the officers arrived on scene, no one was there. During a canvass of the area, Police Officer Anthony Barton then, located a blue Subaru on the east bound Long Island Expressway service road, at Francis Lewis Boulevard, where he saw a male flailing his arms to get the officers attention. Officer Barton approached the front passenger side of the vehicle and discovered a female seated in the upright position. The female was in labor with the baby’s head crowning. Officer Barton then began to receive instructions over the radio from Officer Michael Pyzikiewicz, who is also assigned to Highway Unit 3 and has been a paramedic since 1997. Officer Pyzikiewicz directed Officer Barton to ensure that the mom is lying in a flat position, keep the baby warm and to clear the fluids from the mouth when the baby is born. Officer Barton reclined the seat’s backrest and received the baby with a white baby blanket with blue and pink stripes that was in the car. He then turned the car’s heat up and began to clear the fluid from the newborn’s mouth when Officer Pyzikiewicz arrived at the scene and took over. EMS arrived shortly thereafter and handed Officer Pyzikiewicz a bulb syringe, which he used to extract additional fluid, and then clamped the umbilical cord while EMS cut it. EMS then took the baby into the ambulance while Officers Barton and Pyzikiewicz assisted mom onto the stretcher and placed her into the ambulance along with the dad where they were transported to Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Both mom and the baby boy are doing well. Two nimble cops helped a woman safely deliver a baby boy Saturday on the service road off a Queens highway, police said.

NYPD sergeant charged with drunken driving on Staten Island

NYPD Sgt. Gary Caporale earned the Supervisor of the Year award from the 72nd Precinct in October. The 15-year department veteran was found passed out in his idling car on Forest Ave., near South Ave., in Mariner’s Harbor about 4:30 a.m. An NYPD sergeant was arrested early Saturday when he was caught drunk behind the wheel of his car on Staten Island.
