In 1982, Lenell faced what every person fears,he was falsely accused, convicted, and imprisoned for aggravated robbery, a crime he did not do. Even though his whereabouts were corroborated by colleagues and coworkers, Lenell was sentenced to life imprisonment.
After 16 months in a stringent Texas correctional facility, Lenell walked out a free man! With prayer and help from the NAACP, some unexpected allies like CBS’s 60 Minutes, and local media, Lenell claimed victory over a powerful institution that sought to end his life as he knew it!
After living through, what he calls, his ‘Texas Nightmare’, Lenell has emerged a stronger and wiser man than ever before. His story has been retold countless times on CBS, NBC, and ABC television stations and in a made-for-TV movie called “Guilty of Innocence: The Lenell Geter Story.”
His co-workers, friends and family members never gave up hope that Lenell would clear his name. They held many fund-raisers, met with attorneys, and made themselves available to the media to help expose his travesty of justice. He credits, "faith in God" as his miracle that shined brightly through his darkest and most painful hour of despair, that enabled him to stand up for justice during a cold, cruel, and dangerous life in the Texas Department of Correction.

Lenell Geter has earned a Mechanical Engineering Technology degree from South Carolina State University; however, today, he is helping to engineer the lives of people to have faith and to believe that they too can overcome, succeed and prosper in life!

He tells students that “obstacles will be their companion on the road to achieving their goals and dreams; however, the manner in which they respond to those challenges will ultimately determine their destinies."
Lenell and his wife, Marcia, reside in South Carolina, and they have three daughters, Marquita, Nzinga and Zakiya Geter.
