Ismaaiyl Brinsley's ex-girlfriend tried to talk him out of shooting himself, took a bullet in the gut instead. Brinsley, 28, confronted Shaneka Thompson, 29, in Baltimore. She stopped him when he pointed a gun at his head, threatening to take his life. Then he shot her. From there, he drove to Brooklyn and later killed two cops. Police said his Instagram page contains messages of self-despair and anti-government.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder decided against forcing New York Times reporter James Risen to reveal his source for his 2006 book, ‘State of War.’ The program provides one-time death benefit payments to children or spouses of officers killed in the line of duty and financial assistance for surviving children or spouses to defray educational expenses. Attorney General Eric Holder has asked department officials to reach out to the families of the slain NYPD cops to inform them of the program, and to speed up their applications to receive benefits.
