Rush to Judgement
According to a report by the Washington Post,
Freddie Gray intentionally tried to injure himself while in the police
van. If this turns out to be true, it represents yet another case where
President Obama has rushed to judgement.
The Washington Post obtained a police document in which another man
sharing the police transport vehicle with Freddie Gray told
investigators that banging could be heard against the walls. The
prisoner went on to say that he believed that Freddie Gray “was
intentionally trying to injure himself.”
This information came from an official police document and so far is the
only documentation of facts that we really have as to the nature of
Freddie Gray's death. If this turns out to be true, then the narrative
of racist police brutality is once again thrown out the window.
Furthermore, it will be yet another example of President Obama rushing
to judgement without all the facts. He's done this before in cases like
Ferguson and Trayvon Martin. He is a constitutional lawyer; he has a
responsibility to tell people that you are innocent until proven guilty.
But instead, Obama would rather tell the narrative that suits him
best. He is the president of the United States and it is irresponsible.
He is having an impact on the mindset of the people in a negative way.
The facts be damned in the face
of a narrative that must be perpetrated. This then gives cover for
others to simply ignore the facts as well. Case in point, “Hands up,
don't shoot” never actually happened in the case of Michael Brown. But
that didn't stop people from believing it. |

The Facts Be Damned Tomorrow, Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby will receive
the confidential findings of
the police department's investigation into Freddie Gray's death. Based
on these findings, Mosby will be the one to decide whether to bring
charges against any of the six officers involved. Mosby is a 35 year
old African-American who has been on the job for a few months. Mosby
happened to be married to a member of the city council who represents
areas of West Baltimore, where the riots occurred. According to the New York Times
, she ran on a platform of being tougher on police abuses. She is likely under an enormous amount of pressure to bring an indictment of murder (intentional harm). Some say
that this would be the only acceptable outcome for upset residents who
would likely protest an indictment of involuntary manslaughter or no
charges at all.
The report itself is a source of
controversy. Many are demanding that it be released to the public
tomorrow, though leaders in Baltimore are trying to downplay their
expectations. It's feared that protests could break out once again,
demanding that the information be released. Have they thought about how
they would react if the information is released and it turns out the
cops did nothing wrong in this case? Perhaps it will be just like Obama
- the facts be damned. |
