Another Tragedy...Another Debate
Yesterday marked another tragedy in America with a shooting at Umpqua
Community College in Oregon. The details remain unclear but it appears
that the shooter, Christopher Mercer, was targeting Christians
as part of his rampage. President Obama quickly arranged a news
conference where he argued that these mass shootings are "something we
should politicize" and "each time something like this happens I'm going
to say there is something we can do about it." Referencing more
spending on mental health support and stricter gun laws, Obama made an
impassioned plea to Congress to act on some of his proposals.
Most of the candidates took to twitter in a predictable way. Democrats
like Martin O'Malley, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders clamored for more gun control
, while Republican candidates reflected on the families and offered
prayers for the victims. Dr. Ben Carson was a bit more vocal, telling
radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt, "Well, obviously, there are going to
be those who are going to be calling for gun control. But you know, that
happens every time we have one of these incidents. Obviously, that's
not the issue. The issue is the mentality of these people. And we need
to be looking at the mentality of these individuals and seeing if there
are any early warning clues that we can gather that will help us as a
society to be able to identify these people ahead of time."
As we all try and seek answers to these tragedies, the debate seems to
have shifted from a "ban the guns" conversation to a more sensible
discussion of meaningful reform and treatment. As with most important
issues, the solution will not come from more government regulation but
from the spirit of the American people who're tired of reading about
these senseless tragedies. |

Fighting ISIS with Better Ideas?
President Obama once again embarrassed America after he gave a speech at
the U.N. earlier this week claiming we could fight ISIS with "better
ideas." He also-predictably-shunned the concept of ISIS having anything
to do with Islam and made sure everyone knew "violent extremism is not
unique to any one faith."
In a surprising twist, UK Prime Minister David Cameron rebuked Obama's naïve view
of the Islamic group saying while Obama is right that violent extremism
isn't unique to just one faith "...we have to be frank that the biggest
problem we have today is the Islamist extremist violence that has given
birth to ISIL, to al-Shabab, to al-Nusra, al Qaeda and so many other
groups."
Wouldn't it be nice if Obama could take a page out of Cameron's book? |
