Trump's First TV Ad Donald Trump has hit the ground running in 2016. He's starting off the new year by releasing the first of what is sure to be many TV ads. WATCH: Donald Trump's first TV campaign spot

In the 30 second spot, Trump focuses on the threats posed by "radical islamic terrorism" as well as unchecked illegal immigration.

According to The Washington Post:

Trump said that he has six to eight ads in production and that his was a "major buy and it's going to go on for months." He said he hopes the spots impress upon undecided voters that the country has become "a dumping ground."

"The world is laughing at us, at our stupidity," he said. "It's got to stop. We've got to get smart fast - or else we won't have a country."

Here are 5 facts you need to know in order to understand what's happening:

1. The protests began on Saturday in support of Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steve Hammond, two Oregon ranchers convicted of terrorism related charges for arson on Federal lands. According to the U.S. Attorney's office:

A jury sitting in Pendleton, Oregon found the Hammonds guilty of the arsons after a two-week trial in June 2012. The trial involved allegations that the Hammonds, owners of Hammond Ranches, Inc., ignited a series of fires on lands managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), on which the Hammonds had grazing rights leased to them for their cattle operation.

The ranchers claimed the first, which burned approximately 130 acres of federal land, were "backfires" lit to protect their feed.

Dwight and Steve were originally sentenced to three months and one year in prison respectively.

The courts vacated the original sentence and re-sentenced the Hammonds to 5 years in prison, the mandatory minimum sentence for the crime for which they were convicted. The Hammonds were scheduled to report back to prison today...(continue reading)
