What We Know About Omar Mateen, The Orlando Night Club Shooter Shortly after 2am on Sunday morning a gunman entered Pulse nightclub, a popular hangout for Orlando's gay community, and opened fire on patrons. The perpetrator, who police have identified as Omar Mir Saddiqui Mateen, took a number of hostages inside the night club but was killed in a gun battle with police several hours after the shooting began. According to authorities, Omar Mateen killed 50 and injured 53. If the death toll is accurate, Sunday's shooting is the worst mass-shooting in history, and the worst terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11. Blood donations are needed to treat the injured. We've learned that Mateen was a devout Muslim who regularly attended services at his local mosque. So just what kind of lessons are they teaching in Florida mosques?
